Denim Day 2019 Photoshoot
In April 2019, Khrystyana coordinated an event for denim day. Dated for the 24th April, denim day is a day for people to show support for survivors of sexual assault by wearing denim, in protest of the 1998 decision in Italy to overturn a conviction because the victim was wearing jeans.
As a survivor of sexual assault herself, Khrystyana wanted to create the event to bring awareness by empowering fellow survivors. As with her other photoshoots, this one was organised via her Instagram page. 27 people took part in the event overall.
Peter Devito was the photographer for the entire shoot, somebody that Khrystyana has worked with in the past and trusted to handle the subject matter respectfully, while capturing the energy of the models.
It was important on the day that the space was safe and open, so that everybody involved felt they could share openly about their experiences and know they were supported.
The intention of the photoshoot wasn’t just to capture photos, but to provide a platform and a voice to the models. It was an opportunity for them to say things their younger selves might have needed to hear, or other survivors. It was about healing, and overcoming obstacles through strength and unity.
More than just a one-off event, all the models stayed in contact and provided a supportive environment for one another, both online and in person. This wasn’t just about making a statement, but forming new bonds and connections.
It’s tragically easy to feel left out, alone, and isolated as survivor. But there is a community of people who understand and are always ready to listen.
